Planes, Pools and Patterns: Clare’s Crocheting Travels for CareDogs
From train journeys to temple steps, Clare’s crochet hook is always in hand—with warmth, joy, and community support for CareDogs one stitch at a time…
Hi, I’m Clare. I’ve been crocheting for over 20 years—ever since my son asked for a birthday present like no other: a blanket as big as he was! Determined to make it happen, I taught myself to crochet and created a 6ft-by-6ft granny square blanket. He still takes it on camping trips today.
I first turned to charity crocheting during a difficult time, when my late husband was very ill. We were in and out of hospital appointments, and crocheting helped me pass those long hours with purpose. Interestingly, I’ve never made anything for myself—every piece has always been a gift for someone else.
Supporting CareDogs felt like a natural next step. I’ve seen first-hand the incredible impact the charity has on older people and the wider community. Although I was scared of dogs as a child, my best friend has always had them, and her influence helped me become more confident around dogs. These days, I even dog sit for her!
Clare crocheting ‘paw’ coasters for CareDogs events on a flight to Türkiye and by the pool
Volunteering with CareDogs suits me perfectly—it’s flexible, meaningful, and I can take my crochet with me anywhere. On a recent holiday to Turkey, I managed four solid hours of crochet on the plane, stitched away during day trips, and even crocheted by the pool. Bliss!
As well as crocheting for CareDogs, I support the charity in other ways too. I make a small monthly donation (about the price of a couple of fancy coffees), took part in the 500 Miles walking challenge in March, and joined in the Christmas prize draw. I’ve even started using the EasyFundraising app—such a simple way to give back while shopping online.
CareDogs’ mission of tackling social isolation one dog walk at a time resonates with me, and I’m proud to be a small part of something so special.
